Tea and innovation are topics that are broached cautiously but with optimism. A desire to respect the past and cultural norms but with an increased desire to do better for the environment. This is another company I discovered through the Global Japanese Tea Association and I am happy to share them with you today.

Location Headquarters: Shizuoka, Japan
Company Focus: Authentic Japanese Tea
Most popular tea(s)?
- One of our most popular teas is #7 Marubi, a roasted tea made from tea stems. Slowly roasted at under 150°C, it develops a fragrant yet gentle sweetness without any bitterness. It’s an easy entry point for those unfamiliar with Japanese tea, and is especially loved for its low caffeine content.
Does the company name have a meaning?
- Yes, Mohei is derived from the name of our tea master, Honda Mohei. The name reflects our desire to bridge tradition and innovation, while honoring the philosophy and craftsmanship of the artisan behind the tea.
Do you participate in any charities?
- We don’t currently have any formal partnerships with charitable organizations. However, sustainable agriculture and fair producer relationships are central to our mission. In the future, we hope to contribute more directly to initiatives related to environmental and agricultural preservation.
Favorite tea (yours or the team’s)?
- Personally, I have a deep love for kamairicha, known for its aromatic complexity. Within the team, deep-steamed sencha and highly roasted hojicha are especially popular during the colder months.
Thoughts on transparency in the tea industry?
- We believe transparency is essential, not only in the tea-making process, but also in our relationships with producers and the land. We openly share details about our tea origins, cultivation methods, and producer stories across our Instagram, YouTube, and website blog, aiming to foster trust and deep connection with our community.
What role does tea play in our lives?
- To us, tea is more than a beverage. It’s a daily ritual, a quiet moment of connection with nature and with ourselves. In Japan, tea embodies the seasons and the spirit of hospitality. Through our teas, we hope to bring that same sense of stillness and richness to people’s lives around the world.
Anything else you’d like to add?
- We are a small team with a big dream: to bring authentic Japanese tea to the world while honoring the people and places behind each leaf. Thank you for offering us this opportunity to share a part of our journey.
