The Canadian Barley Tea Company

Over the holiday season, we at Steepster will trade advent calendars with tea. I was intrigued by this pitcher-sized packet I received on one of the days and after looking up the company, I knew I had to share them with you. Japanese barley tea isn’t new to me but had not heard of this company. This sister-owned company sources their own barley locally in Canada for a Japanese-inspired, locally sourced new barley drink they now call Mo’mugi. If you haven’t tried it already I highly recommend it. Cheers!

Company Name: The Canadian Barley Tea Company

Website: www.canadianbarleytea.com

Location Headquarters: Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada

 Company Focus:

  • To introduce North American tea lovers to mugicha, roasted barley tea, made locally, inspired by Japan!

 Most popular company tea?

  • We only make mo’mugi, in single-serve or pitcher-serve sizes

Does the company name have a meaning?

  • We wanted to be sure people understood what we sold, and mo’mugi means more, because you’ll want more, and mugi is barley in Japanese, where we got our inspiration. We share our tea story in our fun manga on our site: https://www.canadianbarleytea.com/pages/manga

Do you participate in any charities?

  • Yes! We’ve donated tea/funds to over thirty charities/events over our five years in business.  The full list is here on our Giving Back page, https://www.canadianbarleytea.com/pages/giving-back
  • The most recent one was very special, a family bingo to support local Indigenous language learning.

What is your and/or your co-workers’ favorite tea?

  • We love cream of Earl Grey and mint, especially from the Pacific Northwest, it is so much tastier than imported ones.
  • From TeaTiff: I had to add this from their website as well: “So back in British Columbia, it quickly became our go-to drink after snowboarding in the mountains in the winter, swimming in Lake Shuswap in the summer, and whenever we needed a delicious thirst-quencher. We basically couldn’t live without it.”

What are your thoughts on transparency in the tea industry?

  • We believe if you import your tea you shouldn’t label it with local names.  We tend to see a lot of that.

What role does tea play in our lives?

  • Tea is as important as water. It soothes and comforts us, and the heavenly aroma can instantly bring back happy memories.

Anything else you’d like to add?

  • Please try mo’mugi hot (and cold as a water replacement by simply adding a teabag to cold water) and visit our site, sign up for our newsletter, and get 10% off your first order! (Canada only)

TeaTiff Picks: Mo’mugi. This is what they do and who they are. In fact, it’s the only thing they do. It is a craft they have honed and it is delicious. But don’t just stop with it plain, you can also try it spiced like chai or make it into a latte.
